Cebuanos come together for campus journalism

CEBU CITY, Philippines – Enthused to foster a scholarly level of publication, school paper advisers (SPAs) from different private and public high schools in Cebu were called to hone and harness the journalism skills of students. 

The SPAs were summoned by the Campus Journalists de Cebu to hold their second annual one-day inter-secondary schools writeshop and competition on basic campus journalism on Saturday, September 12, 2015. This year’s theme is “Teaching millennials learning Campus Journalism in the Digital Age.”

It will actively involve high school campus journalists in lectures and discussions about the basics of the different areas of campus journalism, highlight the strengths of individual students, and enhance recruiting efforts and translate into better trained student journalists. 

“Attending and participating in this workshop will be a good exposure for our student writers,” said Donna Grace Cotejo, a school paper adviser for the Tagming at OPRRA National High School.

The seminar-workshop and competition, which was proposed to be held at the Cebu Institute of Technology-University, will be conducted by the Campus Journalists de Cebu in cooperation with the host school. 

It will also feature a number of well-known media figures and field experts as key speakers. 

Through one-day innovative, essential training, the participants will leave with  some knowledge, skills, and attitude focused on the core tenets and best practices of basic campus journalism. This will help them in the fast-paced, competitive field of Schools Press Conferences (SPCs).

Furthermore, they will foster genuine and lasting camaraderie with other campus journalists and maintain the willingness to keep on learning. They will be fully engaged as they enjoy the experience. 

“We are committed to engaging school publications and increasing the proportion of people with the inclination and dexterity in campus journalism. By actively engaging media professionals, we hope to give the fledgling journalists a better understanding of scholastic journalism and media education,” said Campus Journalists de Cebu head Calvin Cempron.

In 2014, more than 300 student writers and school paper advisers participated in the 2014 Inter-Secondary Schools Writeshop and Competition on Basic Campus Journalism held at Cebu City Public Library. – Rappler.com
