Learn better parenting skills at the MLAC Parenting Academy

MANILA, Philippines – The family is the basic unit of society. The happiness of the family depends a lot on how the parents take care and raise their children. And yet it is very interesting that despite this knowledge, the only requirement for anyone to become a parent is to have a child.

When you think about it, our schools prepare us for our careers. If you want to be a doctor, a lawyer, a teacher, an accountant, a businessman or woman, you have to train for many years…and yet none of us are given training to do what perhaps is the most difficult and full-time job there is…being a parent.

We simply “learn” how to become a parent through our own experiences with our own parents, whether or not these parents are loving and kind, or abusive and hurtful. This is what we know and this is what we tend to pass on to our children.

In my work as a Clinical Psychologist for 40+ years, I have encountered parents who think that beating up a child is the proper way of disciplining, parents who raise children who end up becoming corrupt people with no accountability because they were rescued from every consequence of their actions, and parents who are clueless as to how to raise children to become well-rounded, emotionally healthy and happy individuals.

This is why my personal advocacy, which is also the advocacy of my team, MLAC Psychosocial Services for Well-Being, is to promote proper and successful parenting using our background in Psychology. In particular, our programs focus on understanding and preventing child abuse and family violence, helping OFW families, helping people who have experienced different kinds of trauma, and even helping health service professionals and parents to take care of themselves to avoid burnout.
