MANILA, Philippines – After his conviction for tax evasion in 2008, actor Wesley Snipes was released from federal prison Tuesday April 2 and placed under house arrest, according to Huffington Post.

Following his release, he will be supervised by the New York Community Corrections Office until July 19. In a report by Forbes, Snipes was originally scheduled for release on the said date, in completion of his 3 year sentence. He entered McKean prison in Pennsylvania in 2010.

Best known as a vampire slayer in the “Blade” trilogy, Snipes is said to have belonged to a group opposing the government’s tax regulations. According to prosecutors, he owed millions of dollars in taxes after failing to file returns for at least a decade.

In his 2008 trial, Snipes was acquitted of federal tax fraud and conspiracy charges, but was convicted of failing to file income tax returns from 1999 to 2004, for which he received the maximum sentence.

He filed several appeals after but all were denied. – Rappler.com
