Avril Lavigne opens up about battle with Lyme disease
'I think for me, it's like a second shot at life,' says Avril

MANILA, Philippines – Singer Avril Lavigne said that she is doing better after being diagnosed with Lyme disease last year

In an interview aired on ABC News, Avril recalled the time she found out about her condition. Crying through parts of her interview, she discussed the ordeal before her diagnosis.

“I literally became bedridden last October…I was in Los Angeles…it was the worst time of my life. I was seeing every specialist, and literally the top doctors…they would pull  up their computer and be like, ‘Chronic fatigue syndrome.’ Or, ‘Why don’t you try to get out of bed, Avril, and just go play the piano?’ It’s like, ‘Are you depressed?’”

She said that she would wake up with night sweats and felt like she had the flu.

“This went on and off for a month. And I saw my doctor right away, got blood tests, got swabbed, and they didn’t really know what was wrong with me,” she said.

She said she started to suspect she had Lyme diseases two months after observing the symptoms.  She then immediately went looking for a Lyme specialist.

According to the website of the Centers for Disease and Control Prevention, Lyme disease is caused by “bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi and is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected blacklegged ticks.”

“Symptoms include include fever, headache, fatigue, and a characteristic skin rash called erythema migrans. If not treated, it can spread to joints, the heart, and the nervous system,” the website explained.

With the support of her husband, Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger, family and friends, she was able to get through the ordeal.

Avril’s fans also tried their best to cheer her up, sending words of encouragement through social media, videos, and letters.

“I sat there in my bed and I watched the videos and, like, did exactly what I’m doing now. I cried through the whole thing,” she said. “Honestly, I felt very, very loved. And it sounds silly saying it, but I really truly did feel my fans through the process.”

Months after being diagnosed, Avril said that she is recovering through antibiotics and rest.

“I’m about halfway through my treatment,” she shared. “I’m doing a lot better. Seeing a lot of progress. … I’m just really grateful to know that, like, I will make [a] 100% recovery.”

Avril also shared words of encouragement for those suffering with Lyme disease.

“There is hope. Lyme disease does exist. And you can get better.”

She also said that she is looking forward to performing again.

“I think for me, it’s like a second shot at life, I really want to go out there and truly do what I love. So I’m so excited for life after this.”

Avril is scheduled to perform her latest song “Fly” on July 25 at the opening ceremonies of the Special Olympics World Games In Los Angeles. – Rappler.com
