The ‘Narcos’ spin-off explores the birth of Mexico’s drug war

MANILA, Philippines – Narcos: Mexico is premiering on Netflix soon, and in the vein of its predecessor, Narcos, the show is going to take an action-packed deep dive into a raging drug war, this time further north, in Mexico.

In true Narcos fashion, this show’s drug lord is flashy, fashionable, and unafraid to flaunt his wealth, but isn’t afraid to get his own hands bloody if need be – not unlike Pablo Escobar or the members of the Cali cartel.

In Narcos: Mexico, the drug lord goes by the name of Felix Gallardo. Played by a dashing Diego Luna, he is the enigmatic Godfather of the notorious Guadalajara Cartel, one of the first and most vicious drug traffickers in 1980s Mexico.

Gallardo is the target of DEA agent Kiki Camarena, played by a brooding Michael Peña. In the series, Camarena moves his wife and young son to Guadalajara from California to take on his new assignment, but quickly learns that it’s going to be more difficult than he expected.

The more Camarena uncovers about Gallardo and his cartel, the more complicated things become for – and if the trailer is anything to go by – it’s going to be one hell of a goose chase filled with explosions, gunfights, car chases, and cocaine.
