Makeup for work: How to get ready in 5 minutes
Beauty blogger Lindy Tsang, aka BubzBeauty, shows us a quick, no makeup makeup look with products you already have in your kit

MANILA, Philippines – Most no-makeup makeup tutorials on the Internet require a lot of products to cover up and define, but when we asked Lindy Tsang (aka Bubzbeauty on YouTube) to demonstrate a quick, natural look, she showed us that you probably already have everything you need in your  kit.

After an event for StyleCon Asia on Monday, June 6, Bubz headed up to her manager’s hotel room to demonstrate a 5-minute work look for us. She picked out products from my own stash and some from her manager’s to create a natural no-makeup look.

“The whole idea for office makeup I think is to look well-rested and radiant,” explained Bubz before starting. “That is the key thing, I think, nothing overdone.”

The result: a fresh, bright-eyed face using only 8 products. Here are some of her makeup tips for when you’re rushing out the door in the morning.

Conceal and brighten

Bubz started out with concealer, doubling it up as highlighter – a subtler way to contour everyday than using darker shades that could turn messy.

Choosing a concealer that’s one or two shades lighter than your skin tone and applying them to the high points of your face will bring out your features and make your face look less dull.

The same goes for under your eyes – brightening that area will counter those dark circles and lift the cheekbones. Meanwhile, applying it down the bridge of your nose will define its shape, and the highlight will contribute to a nice-looking glow.

Highlight your forehead, tops of your cheekbones, and chin too: “I call this the diamond effect… which makes the face look more 3-dimensional,” explained Bubz.

Tip: Bubz says to blend your highlight outwards to get the most natural look.

Even out your complexion

For foundation in hot, humid Philippines, Bubz recommends a powder formula: “You don’t want anything that’s so liquid-based on top. Usually, I would use powder foundation, it doesn’t feel like as sticky.”

There’s no need to go out and buy a new foundation if you’re using a liquid formula, though. It can work for you too, especially if you’re rushing out the door – Just warm some of product up with your hands, then gently press it onto your face.

If you’re using a liquid formula, don’t forget to set your work with a transluscent powder! “If you want your skin to look healthy, you don’t want to over-mattify the skin, it should have a little bit of shine, because that shows its radiance,” said Bubz.

So for powder, concentrate on your T-zone (your forehead, down your nose, and your chin) and what Bubz called the “A shape” – the areas to the side of your nose and chin.

Fill in your brows

Defining your eyebrows can instantly make you look more put together, because they lift the eyes, making them look less tired.

Bubz used a powder to fill in our model’s brows, which is best for a natural look, but there are a lot of textures available in the market too, like liquid brow pens, brow pencils, even brow pomades.

Regardless of which you use, try to make thin, short, hair-like strokes in places where there your brows get patchy. Don’t feel pressured to fill the entire brow and don’t be too heavy-handed.

Bubz used a lighter color for the inner portion of the brows, ran what was left on the brush on the ends, then filled in the ends with a slightly darker color: “So there’s more definition, so it just looks a bit more sharper. Usually, you can take a darker color at the bottom, so there’s more depth,” she explained.

Contour the eyes

For the eyes, Bubz only used two shadows – a light shimmer and a light matte – and one fluffy brush.

The rules of contouring the face apply to the eyes too: a light color brings features out, while a dark color creates depth.

Run the shimmer shadow on the browbone to lift the eyes, then put some on the ball or center of the eyelids too. Then, sweep the darker matte color in a windshield wiper-motion on your eyesocket to make the eyes look deeper-set.

When that’s all done, pop some shimmer into the inner corner of the eyes. “Sometimes that’s all you need for [awake-looking] eyes,” said Bubz.

Tip: To ensure you’re using a light hand, Bubz said your brush bristles shouldn’t be bending or moving around too much while blending. It also helps to keep your eyes slightly open, she said, when applying eyeshadow, to help with placement.

Lightly define the eyes

Draw a thin line across the lash line with eyeliner, using short strokes to get as straight a line as possible. “For work, you definitely want to keep it clean – [the line should go] no further than a third of your eyelid crease,” advised Bubz.

Bubz used a liquid liner for this look, then lifted the lashes and filled in under and between them with a kohl. This trick is called “tightlining” or “invisible liner” because it’s undetectable, but makes the lashes look thicker. Still, only using one kind of eyeliner is fine – before she found out a kohl was available, Bubz was only going to use liquid.

Tip: When putting on mascara, just concentrate on the tips of your lashes. “Sometimes when you wear mascara, it could feel very heavy and makes you feel tired, but if you just concentrate on the tips, you don’t really have this problem,” Bubz said.

Lips and cheeks

“Sometimes when your eyes are so tired, when your lips look more bold, you won’t even notice the tired eyes,” said Bubz.

On our model, she applied a bright pink lipstick to the center of the lips, then blended it out with her finger. “You don’t want really neat lips, you just sort of want the lips to look pigmented,” she explained.

Bubz finished off the look with a sweep of peachy-pink blush on the cheeks, to perk up the complexion.
