MANILA, Philippines – Following the observance of Disaster Preparedness Week that started Monday, June 10, the government will still target compliance with the “zero-casualty” policy during disasters.

In a radio interview over dzRB Radyo ng Bayan on Saturday, June 14, Deputy Spokesperson Abigail Valte said “the target remains the same” as the nation prepares for the onslaught of weather disturbances brought about by the rainy season.

Sana po wala namang matinding bagyo na pumasok nguni’t lahat naman tayo ay naghahanda
para sa onset of the rainy season,” she said. (We hope there will be no destructive typhoons that will enter [the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR)], but we are all preparaing for the onset of the rainy season.)

The Palace official said Aquino has instructed government agencies to take into account the interests of vulnerable sectors during calamities.

Valte also reiterated the need for inter-agency collaboration.

She said the Department of Social Welfare and Development, the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council, and the Department of the Interior and Local Government and their partner-agencies are developing pro-active measures towards better disaster risk-reduction and management.

In particular, the agencies mentioned are unifying efforts to develop protocols to be followed whenever a storm enters the PAR.

For flood control, Malacañang efforts include flood drills, improved early warning systems, creation of containment basins, cleaning up of esteros, and relocation of informal settlers.

Last Thursday, June 13, low-lying areas in Metro Manila experienced flooding after heavy rain. Classes were suspended as a result. – Rappler.com
