Typhoon Lando: Communities with storm surge advisories

MANILA, Philippines – Due to Typhoon Lando (Koppu), a storm surge may reach a maximum of 3 meters in Aurora and neighboring provinces, state weather bureau PAGASA said on Sunday, October 18.

A storm surge is the abnormal rise of water generated by a storm over and above the predicted astronomical tides. It is caused by strong winds from a storm pushing on the ocean’s surface, causing water to pile up as it moves toward land. (READ: Storm surge 101)

PAGASA and the Department of Science and Technology’s (DOST) Project NOAH released a list of communities with an impending threat of a storm surge identified by the latter’s latest simulation run.

“It serves as a guideline for timely, steady, and organized evacuation of communities, residents, and families living in the affected areas,” said Project NOAH. “Do not evacuate during the typhoon as flying debris caused by strong winds can cause fatal casualties and loss.”

There are different storm surge advisories (SSA) depending on its height. The two municipalities in Aurora are under SSA 1 since it is below 2 meters.

Typhoon Lando continues its slow march through Northern Luzon on Sunday, October 18, and is expected to linger over Luzon for most of the coming week. – Rappler.com
