Project Agos to push for #ZeroCasualty in N. Mindanao

MANILA, Philippines – To help local government units (LGUs) and civil society organizations (CSOs) in harnessing social media for disaster risk reduction and management, MovePH’s Project Agos will conduct a workshop in Cagayan de Oro City, June 18 to 19.  

Northern Mindanao, particularly Cagayan de Oro and Iligan cities, has been badly hit last December 2011 when Tropical storm Sendong caused widespread flash floods along the region. 

In August 2014, more than 1000 people were affected by flooding, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.  The region is affected by Intertropical Convergence Zone (ICTZ).

Project Agos: #ZeroCasualty goal 

The workshop will highlight how social media and crowdsourcing help to improve disaster preparedness and response programs of LGUs and CSOs using the platform. Participants will also learn how collaboration and information-sharing among various stakeholders contribute to the #ZeroCasualty goal. 

Launched in September 2013, Project Agos is an information and communications platform that combines top-down government action with bottom-up citizen involvement to help communities adapt to climate change, and become better prepared for disasters. (READ: #ProjectAgos: One-stop shop for climate change) The platform is operated by MovePH, Rappler’s civic engagament arm.

Project Agos conducted its first LGU capacity building workshop in Metro Manila in November last year and has conducted similar workshops in Iloilo and Cebu in March this year, in Leyte last April, and in Camarines Sur last week.  

Project Agos partners include national government agencies, international and local non-governmental organizations, local government units, and private groups.
