[Right of Way] Why your red light is the longest

MANILA, Philippines – We’ve all been there, whether as pedestrians or motorists – patiently waiting for the red light to turn green. But the go-signal could be fleeting, as we find ourselves, more often than not, rushing to cross the street lest we get flagged for beating the red light.

Why is such the case? Why are red traffic lights on for so long, and green lights so short?
