Rappler Talk: Leni Robredo on running for VP
What's next for Leni Robredo?

MANILA, Philippines – Leni Robredo’s involvement in politics only started after the untimely death of her husband, former Naga City mayor and interior secretary Jesse Robredo.

Robredo defeated the matriarch of a political dynasty in 2013. But, if she wasn’t thrust into politics in 2013, she could have been a regional trial court judge. She was shortlisted to become presiding judge in any of 3 regional trial courts in the Bicol region before her husband’s death.

Robredo also founded Lakas ng Kababaihan ng Naga, was the president of the Naga City Council for Women, and a member of Federacion International de Abogados. She also worked with the Public Attorney’s Office.

On October 5, Robredo accepted the challenge to run for Vice President. She says the decision-making process was the toughest period that she and her daughters have been through since Jesse died.

She said they had no doubt Jesse would do the same when asked to serve. Thus, she said, she can’t refuse the call to serve.

Rappler talked to Vice Presidential candidate Leni Robredo about the triumphs and struggles of a low-key political wife, and now her decision to run for a national post. So far, she’s the only female running for the second highest post in the country.
