Boracay tricycle drivers asked to stop overcharging passengers
'We have to put a stop to these reports of a handful of abusive drivers preying on foreign travelers and visitors in Boracay,' says Councilor Maylynn Aguirre Graft

AKLAN, Philippines – A councilor in the town of Malay, Aklan, appealed to operators and drivers of tricycles and e-trikes to stop the practice of allegedly overcharging locals and foreigners in Boracay.

Malay Councilor Maylynn Aguirre Graf made this appeal after a group of foreigners was offered P1,500 for a trip from a waiting area in Balabag to a hotel in the northern end of Boracay.

“It is happening in the island for many years. It is worsening,” Graf said.

The councilor proposed for-hire or on-call vehicles with an approved tariff to prevent instances of overcharging.

“We have to put a stop to these reports of a handful of abusive drivers preying on foreign travelers and visitors in Boracay Island,” Graf said.

In April, the municipal government of Malay strictly enforced Malay Ordinance No. 342-2015 as amended by Municipal Ordinance No. 383-2018, or the Municipal Traffic Code of Malay, and Malay Ordinance No. 348, or the Driver’s Accreditation Code. Penalties will be imposed on violators to promote discipline and order among motorists. – Rappler.com
