Dominguez endorses Legarda as next House appropriations committee chair
'We look forward...to working with you in the House and we certainly appreciate it if you will be in a leadership position in the finance area,' says Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III to incoming Antique representative Loren Legarda

MANILA, Philippines – Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III on Monday, May 27, endorsed outgoing Senate finance committee chairperson Loren Legarda as the next head of the House committee on appropriations.

Dominguez attended the Senate panel’s final hearing, where it looked into the effects of the reenacted budget during the 1st quarter of 2019.

In his opening speech, Dominguez thanked Legarda for leading the panel in the last 3 years.

“Thank you…. You have certainly contributed a lot to our economic program and working with you has been, on a personal basis, a joy, and I think I speak for the rest of the economic team,” the finance chief said.

“We thank you for leading this committee, for leading the growth of the Philippine economy to a higher plane that we have been achieving,” he added.

Legarda replied, “The feeling is mutual.”

Dominguez then said that he would “certainly appreciate” it if Legarda, incoming Antique representative, would still be involved in finance.

“We look forward…to working with you in the House and we certainly appreciate it if you will be in a leadership position in the finance area,” Dominguez said.

The finance panel’s counterpart in the House of Representatives is the appropriations committee, which has oversight functions on the government’s spending and budget.

Legarda, while laughing, asked Dominguez: “Is that an endorsement or a recommendation? But I’m not the appointing authority.”

To which the finance chief said, “Neither am I, but certainly it is [an endorsement].”

In an earlier interview, the senator said she wants to chair the House appropriations panel, but said she is also “very open” to leading other committees. – Rappler.com
