Datu Puti, Silver Swan free from synthetic acetic acid – PNRI
NutriAsia says that the Datu Puti and Silver Swan brands have always been subjected to testing since 2001

MANILA, Philippines – Manufacturers of popular vinegar brands Datu Puti Vinegar and Silver Swan Sukang Puti said their products remain free from synthetic acetic acid, a material that is not allowed to be used for making the condiment.

In a statement NutriAsia released on Thursday, June 6, both Datu Puti and Silver Swan received certifications from the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI) that showed these brands passed the agency’s test.

The tests conducted last May found high values of Carbon 14 in the said brands. If the vinegar has high values of Carbon 14, this means that the condiment had gone through the natural fermentation process.

A department administrative order from the Department of Health allows only vinegar products that has gone through natural fermentation process to be sold commercially.

“As part of its efforts to improve the standards of its consumer products, Datu Puti and Silver Swan have been subjecting its products to PNRI testing since 2001,” the statement read.

Datu Puti and Silver Swan are brands of NutriAsia and First PGMC Enterprises. Both brands are also approved and registered by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

NutriAsia also said that its manufacturing plants are certified for product safety compliance. (READ: LOOK: Why NutriAsia workers are on strike)

After PNRI came out with a study that as much as 8 out of 10 vinegar brands may have contained synthetic acetic acid, the FDA last Tuesday released their own list of non-compliant brands.

The agency, however, clarified that synthetic acetic acid, which is sourced from fossil fuel-derivatives, is still stafe for consumption.  – Rappler.com
