MANILA, Philippines – From political comebacks and controversial personalities to bizarre claims and attention-grabbing gimmicks, it was an interesting week as hopefuls filed their certificates of candidacy (COCs) for the 2019 elections.

‘Riding in tandem’: Go, Cayetano

Road violation? Some thought so.

On his way to the Commission on Elections (Comelec) main office in Manila to file his COC as Taguig City-Pateros 1st District representative, former foreign secretary Alan Peter Cayetano rode a motorbike with President Rodrigo Duterte’s ex-top aide Bong Go, who is gunning for a Senate seat.

But their gimmick drew mixed reactions, with some pointing out Go should have worn a helmet.

For this commenter, riding a motorbike is much better than parading around in a luxury car.

On October 15, netizens expressed outrage when Twitter user @heycaloy shared photos of Angkas motorcycle drivers banding together in front of the Comelec. They were there to support Go, who filed his COC there the same day. (READ: Twitter war erupts over Angkas drivers supporting Bong Go)

Opposition senatorial slate

For some, the opposition’s senatorial lineup seems promising.

Roxas’ comeback

As for the comeback of former interior secretary Manuel “Mar” Roxas II, there were some who reacted positively and others who said he should remain out of politics.

Some brought up issues associated with Roxas, including the rehabilitation of areas affected by Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in 2013.

No rest for Enrile

“Haven’t you had enough?” asked one commenter, as former Senate president Juan Ponce Enrile, 94, filed his COC.

People who believe Enrile should just rest and give others a chance to serve were dismayed though, as he isn’t slowing down.

If Enrile succeeds in returning to the Senate, he would be 101 years old by the time he completes his term.

Ex-senators in pork barrel scam

“Why are they allowed? Don’t we, as hardworking, taxpaying people, find this insulting?”

This was a common sentiment as Enrile and fellow former senators Jinggoy Estrada and Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr launched their senatorial bids. The 3 ex-senators are accused of involvement in the pork barrel scam, one of the biggest corruption cases in the country.

The irony: Gadon’s wrong COC form

Going with the tagline, “Hindi ako bobo!” (I am not stupid!), senatorial aspirant Larry Gadon ended up using the wrong COC form.
