MANILA, Philippines – The rainy season has officially begun for the western section of the country.

On Tuesday, June 10, state weather bureau PAGASA said the arrival of the southwest monsoon heralds months of rain from June to August.

The months of July and August in particular will bring above normal amounts of rainfall in most parts of the country. However, the season will be marked by monsoon breaks that can last several days.

The onset of the rainy season is characterized by southwesterly winds, high humidity and daily rainshowers and thunderstorms.

The announcement comes on the same day PAGASA detected the development of a low pressure area near Batanes in northern Luzon into Tropical Depression “Ester.”

Rusy Abastillas of the PAGASA Climatology and Agromet Division clarified that this rainy season applies mostly for the western part of the country.

“The eastern section, or regions near the Pacific Ocean, will experience a dry season. Their weather pattern is the opposite of the western side,” she told Rappler.

Eastern provinces include Camarines Sur, Legazpi, Samar, Leyte, Dinagat Islands and others. For these parts of the country, the rainy season is from November to February and is brought about by the northeast monsoon.

On the western side of the country are Metro Manila, Batangas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Palawan, Negros Island and others.

El Niño

Meanwhile, PAGASA also detected unusual warming in the tropical Pacific indicating the development of El Niño in the next 3 months.

Connie Dadivas of the PAGASA Weather Division stressed, “The El Niño isn’t here yet.”

They will continue to monitor the warming of the Pacific to find out when the prolonged season of drought will begin.
