The Alaska Aces coach makes the most out of his week-long break in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup

LAS VEGAS, USA – There’s no rest for a hardworking PBA coach like Alex Compton of the Alaska Aces even if his team has a week-long break in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.

Compton and team governor Dickie Bachmann were spotted scouting in the NBA Summer League at the Thomas & Mack Center, University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) campus.

“We got here in the afternoon of July 7. We had a slight delay. Dropped our bags off and came right to the gym. Totally jetlagging. Put toothpicks on my eyes just to watch a lot of basketball,” Compton shared.

Compton and Bachmann had just watched 3 straight games on Tuesday night, July 9 (Wednesday, July 10, Philippine time) and they even caught the first half of the Houston Rockets playing against the Sacramento Kings, where San Miguel Beermen assistant coach Jimmy Alapag also works as deputy.

“We’re trying to create a database here,” Compton told Rappler. “Because the things with imports is their availability is always an issue. Their health is an issue. And then some guys might be talented but not have the best attitudes in the world. Some of those things you pick up from watching guys on the floor as well.”

Aside from that, it has been a chance for Compton to catch up with some of the people who have helped him in his basketball career.

“I’m trying to make old connections here. My college coach at Cornell University for two years (from 1995 to 1997) is now one of the head scouts of the Detroit Pistons,” he said. “My agent, who brought me to the Philippines, is now the director of scouting for the Denver Nuggets.”

“These are people who are really close to me,” added Compton. “I’m actually going out on a dinner with my coach just to catch up on life. Ask him how my teammates are doing. Spend some more time with my former agent.

“There’s there’s another guy who’s now a college coach that I played with a lot in Wisconsin. Then there’s Drew Dunlop, who’s a skills trainer and who has been to the Philippines. And of course, Jimmy Alapag is here. Our sons go to the same school together. The connections are kind of fun. It’s really a super small world.” – Rappler.com
