MANILA, Philippines – Aside from Terry Butcher, the Philippine Azkals picked up another mastermind in the form of Scott Cooper to help lead the nationals to a promising finish in the upcoming 2018 Suzuki Cup and 2019 Asian Cup.
Cooper was appointed as the senior football adviser, who will work together with Butcher. Both members of the coaching staff haven’t met personally, but have already come to an understanding with each other.
“They actually have chemistry. Scott and Terry have talked already and Terry understands what Scott can contribute to the team,” said Palami about the set-up between the two legends.
Cooper started his managerial career in 2013 when he led Buriram United to an unbeaten run in the Thai Premier League, Thai FA Cup, Thai League Cup and a quarterfinals finish in the 2013 AFC Champions League.
In his most recent stint with Thai club Ubon UMT United, he led them to two promotions to reach division 1.
“For my expectations, I’m looking at the quality of the players and the potential because you’re always looking for the right place and the right time and I think that’s what Philippine is about,” said Cooper about the potential of the Philippine Azkals.
Former Azkals midfielder Chris Greatwich will remain as the assistant coach under Butcher and the national team will also be acquiring the services of Steve Marcells.
