Another cash windfall awaits the Philippine weightlifting standout after reigning in the 2018 Asian Games

JAKARTA, Indonesia – Weightlifting star Hidilyn Diaz stands to receive a cash windfall of P6 million after bagging the Philippines’ first gold medal in the 2018 Asian Games.

The country’s only female Olympic silver medalist will get P2 million from the government through Republic Act 10699, which expands the coverage of incentives granted to national athletes and coaches. (READ: Hidilyn Diaz gives PH first 2018 Asian Games gold)

Diaz, who ruled the women’s 53kg event, will also receive P2 million from the Philippine Olympic Committee.

The Philippine ambassador to Indonesia Lee Hiong Wee and the Siklab Foundation have also pledged P1 million to every Filipino gold winner.

“I am grateful to God that I won the gold medal that all of us Filipinos dream of,” said Diaz, whose golden performance came after the Philippines won four bronze medals – three from taekwondo and one from wushu – in three days of action in the continental games.

Diaz will likely receive more incentives when she gets back home, just like two years ago when she was showered with cash and other rewards after winning a historic silver medal in the 2016 Rio Olympics.

The 27-year-old received more than P10 million cash then – including P5 million from the government and P2 million from President Rodrigo Duterte –  on top of other incentives from the private sector. – Rappler.com
