UP Lady Maroons down reeling Adamson Lady Falcons
Adamson loses in straight sets in its first game since the resignation of head coach Sherwin Meneses

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) — Playing again with the fire and tenacity they’ve show all season so far, the UP Lady Maroons outclassed the reeling Adamson Lady Falcons in straight sets, 25-23, 25-22, 25-22, in the UAAP Season 78 women’s volleyball tournament on Saturday, March 12 at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The Lady Maroons, sitting in third place in the standings with a 6-3 record, overcame the Lady Falcons, who were derailed this past week with the sudden resignation of 4-year head coach Sherwin Meneses.

Domingo Custodio, who is also the men’s volleyball team head coach, will serve as interim coach of the Lady Falcons for the remainder of the season.

Adamson, which trained for the first time under Custodio Friday night before this match, lost back-to-back matches to start the second round is now 3-6.

“It’s ugly but we’ll take the win,” said coach Jerry Yee. “Mahirap pala maipit dyan sa cloud 9 na yan. Malagkit e (It’s hard to get stuck in cloud 9. It’s sticky).”

“I was not thinking about that,” Yee added on whether Adamson’s coaching change affected his team. “I just told them not to be complacent.”

Diana Carlos led UP with 13 points and Kathy Bersola added 11 markers off of 8 attacks, a block and two service aces.

Isa Molde and Marian Buitre had 9 and 8 points, respectively.

Jeannalun Roque topscored for Adamson with 11 points, all off of kills, while Jessica Galanza and team captain Mylene Paat tallied 10 markers apiece. Mary Joy Dacoron chipped in 9 points.

The Lady Maroons showed some more character and spunk as they kept their foes at bay despite the Lady Falcons hanging around at close distance for most of the match.

UP did not let an 18-23 deficit dishearten them, finishing with a 7-0 run to steal the opening set, 25-23.

Adamson threatened to do the exact same thing to the Diliman-based squad in the second, coming to within 21-22 after being down 15-22. UP, however, kept its composure to go up 2-0.

The Lady Maroons also made a comeback in the final frame as they scored 4 straight points to equalize at 19-all, and eventually take over in the clutch to win the match. – Rappler.com
