UAAP preseason: U.P. looks to beef up all varsity teams
The NowheretogobutUP Foundation and RUNRIO launch The Great UP Run to raise funds for all UP sports

MANILA, Philippines – After a breakthrough season by its men’s basketball team, University of the Philippines also hopes to give its other varsity squads as much support.

A new fundraising event called The Great UP Run has been launched by the NowheretogobutUP Foundation Inc. (NTGBUP) and RUNRIO Inc as the different teams gear up for UAAP Season 82.

The Great UP Run, which aims to attract 3,000 runners in 3K, 5K, 10K and 21K categories, is set on August 11 at UP Diliman.

The event – just the first of many yearly events meant to sustain all UP varsity teams – will end with a concert featuring homegrown UP artists.

“All of these initiatives… is to benefit the UP varsity program. We are really here to make us feel and experience that the support really is for all the varsity team and not just a few,” said UP College of Human Kinetics dean Francis Diaz.

UP athletics coach Rio de la Cruz, the president and founder of RUNRIO Inc, also led the event launch recently at Quezon Hall UP Diliman along with NTGBUP chairman, Atty. Agaton Uvero, and NTGBUP vice president for ways and means Cocoy Mercado.

“We would like to democratize the enjoyment of the support to all the varsity team,” Diaz said of UP, which wound up 3rd in the UAAP general championship with 237 points last season.

“Some varsity teams are marginalized compared to the other teams and because of that, we would want these teams to really feel and enjoy the wonderful support.”

Under De la Cruz, UP ended a 36-year title drought in UAAP athletics as its men’s team bagged the Season 81 crown last December.

The Maroons posted runner-up finishes in the men’s division of basketball and badminton and the women’s side of chess, badminton, swimming, and judo in Season 81.

UP also settled for 3rd place in men’s judo and football and in women’s beach volleyball and table tennis. – Czarina Brozo/Rappler.com
