Bracing for a tough challenge, Ateneo makes sure to take the fight out of NU early

ANTIPOLO CITY, Philippines – The Ateneo Blue Eagles had no problem dispatching the winless NU Bulldogs with a 71-50 masterclass in the UAAP Season 82 men’s basketball tournament at the Ynares Center on Sunday, September 22.

Angelo Kouame posted a whopping 7 blocks to highlight an all around-game of 15 points, 13 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals to power the Blue Eagles.

Ateneo’s athletic stopper Gian Mamuyac also came through off the bench with 13 points on a 4-of-6 shooting clip.

With the win, the two-time defending champions rose to 5-0 for the season while the Bulldogs went the opposite direction at 0-5.

It was all Ateneo from the get-go as they enforced their two-way prowess for the quick double-digit lead, 14-4, off a Thirdy Ravena mid-range jumper at the 2:09 mark of the 1st.

The Eagles only increased their firepower in the 2nd as young guns SJ Belangel and BJ Andrade raised the lead to 17, 41-24, off a pair of threes near the end of the half.

Although NU managed to limit Ateneo to just 9 points in the 3rd, it did nothing to help their cause as they still trailed 37-50 heading to the final frame.

From there, Mamuyac continued his offensive surge as he highlighted a final 13-3 run that gave Ateneo a 25-point lead, 65-40, in the final 4 minutes.

“Our defense is doing a good job. It’s generating turnovers and converting those into easy points on the fastbreak,” said Ateneo coach Tab Baldwin.

Still, the game was far from perfect for the American-Kiwi mentor.

“Our field goal percentage doesn’t flatter our play really at 40%. It’s something we need to continue to work on,” he said.

The Ildefonso brothers, who starred for Ateneo in high school, paced the Bulldogs with Dave finishing with 10 points but on a woeful 2-of-9 clip, while Shaun had 9 points and 7 boards.

Before the lopsided duel, the tough-fighting Bulldogs have been tagged as this season’s heartbreak kids, losing 3 games by just one point and another by overtime.
