LNMB renamed ‘Libingan ng Mga Bayani and Friends’ on Google Maps
'Libingan ng mga Bayani' is a grave misnomer, some netizens believe

MANILA, Philippines – In light of the Supreme Court’s ruling that former president Ferdinand Marcos may be buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani (LNMB), netizens showed their opposition by protesting online. Some turned their profile picture black on Facebook while another netizen created an #OccupyLNMB event scheduled for December 11.

Another form of online protest was on Google Maps, where the name of Libingan ng mga Bayani was changed to “Libingan ng mga Bayani at Isang Magnanakaw.” Google’s Map Maker Tool allows users to edit information on Google Maps, including the name of a location.

Since then, the location had been re-edited, this time showing a less aggressive but equally subversive tag: “Libingan ng mga Bayani and Friends.” Rappler discovered the name change on Friday, November 11.

Netizens weren’t the only ones who thought of changing the name of the cemetery; some legislators did, too. In August, Kabayan Representative Harry Roque filed a bill to rename the Heroes’ Cemetery to “Libingan ng mga Bayani at Mga Dating Pangulo.”

Philstar.com article said the Commission on Human Rights chairman Chito Gascon said it should be named “Libingan ng mga Sundalo.”

The Libingan ng mga Bayani is not a place for a dictator, these continuing instances of defacement insist. – Rappler.com
