Next-generation chips for upcoming iPhones now in production – report

The new chip could be the first to use a 7-nanometer design, smaller than the 10-nanometer chips in today's flagships

MANILA, Philippines – Apple's manufacturing partner, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, began mass production of new processors meant for this year's slew of iPhones, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday, May 23. 

People familiar with the matter said the new processors would be 7-nanometer chips, being smaller, yet more powerful and more efficient than the 10-nanometer chips on existing iPhones. 

Using a process that makes smaller chips, over time, can save Apple money when it comes to the cost of building phones.

9to5Mac, in its report, said TSMC began work on the A11 chips of the iPhone 8 in May of last year as well. TSMC also said in April of this year it was producing the 7-nanometer chips, in competition with Qualcomm's 7-nanometer chips, but without stating what company the chips were being made for.

Apple and TSMC spokeswomen, however, did not comment on the Bloomberg report.
